An angry Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at President Bush (but missed) during a news conference in Baghdad. What do you think his punishment, if any, should be?

None. If we are serious about giving the Iraqis the same level of freedom that we enjoy, then that includes the freedom to disagree with us. And that includes throwing shoes at someone that they feel is responsible for their plight.

Honestly, I think that this is (yet another) missed opportunity for the USA. Had Bush said "Hey, I disagree with your statement and I wish you hadn't thrown your shoes at me, but that's what freedom is all about", he would have scored an enormous public relations victory for the USA. Instead, he let the guy be dragged away and pushed into the nearest oubliette by the goon squad. And what kind of message does that send?

Well I disagree. He should be punished. He did miss, after all. He should be locked in a room with an endless supply of shoes to aim at a image of an imbecilic W, and not allowed out until he gets a 100% hit rate.

Actually, he had his wife do this for him. She was interviewed and said she was offended by the shoe throwing but that the Iraqi's deserve free speech and her husband has been the one to make that happen. (And then I wondered why CNN was sounding like FOX news until I realized I was actually watching FOX news - doh!)

Oh, MT! What a sheltered life you've lived. I've been a fan of Tom Lehrer since I was a kid. But, then again, I was a faithful listener of Dr. Demento.

Some of my friends had Dr. Demento albums... maybe I heard him on that. I only really watched television starting 1991 and then stopped in 94 and began a bit for a couple years in the late 90s. I am just now starting to watch television again (got sat. tv, if you can believe, for Xmas).
