Miscegenation

Wonderful post. Speaking of holy kisses (though not in the same context) I once went to an orthodox service which ended with the bishop going round and kissing everyone on the lips. The tourists were flattening themselves against the walls in horror and hiding under chairs.

I just can’t think of a secular rationale for barring same-sex couples from marriage that doesn’t involve some level of bigotry. Social institutions aren’t immutable. Who is to say that marriage simply ‘is’ an ostensibly permanent, legally binding union between a man and a woman? Certainly some would argue that instituting gay marriage might have some kind of negative effect on society - but Amy Winehouse’s heterosexual marriage seems to be causing plenty of havoc, and nobody is calling for a change in the law. Anyway, the decline of the family seems that anti-same-sex-marriage folk threaten seems to be happening (or to have happened) quite without the help of gay marriages.

From a Catholic or Orthodox point of view it’s clear enough: marriage is a sacrament that dates back to Eden. But on that view, no secular marriage is ‘valid’ - it's a legal contract that shares the term marriage – and, again, laws can be changed to be more inclusive, and often should, as in the case of miscegenation. I’m tempted to consider the difference between a sacrament and a secular contract at least as big as the difference between gay and straight relationship.

To be against gay marriage on the grounds of your faith as, say, a Catholic (or Orthodox or evangelical or Zoroastrian or whatever) is inseparable from your broader desire to have your fellow humans join you in being Catholic (or Orthodox etc.) In which case, the overwhelming priority (surely!) is to try to convert ‘em, not to legislate for them while they’re outside the fold. But it’s harder, of course, to evangelise than to protest.

Oops! Essay alert.

sorry - 'decline of the family seems that anti-same-sex-marriage' doesn't make sense. Please ignore the errant 'seems'.
